Founded in 1994, Durango Nature Studies is a non-profit nature education organization dedicated to increasing awareness of, knowledge of, and respect for the natural world by providing diverse and hands-on learning experiences for all ages. We do this through a variety of programs for children, adults, and families. Our programs are taught at area schools, on public lands, and at the 140-acre Durango Nature Center located 12 miles south of Durango on the beautiful Florida River. 

FIELD INSTRUCTOR

Love kids?  Enjoy nature and the outdoors?  Durango Nature Studies is now accepting applications for seasonal field instructors to work as part-time contractors during our Spring 2008 season.

A CDN Field Instructor oversees field programs for elementary school students at the Durango Nature Center south of Durango and delivers classroom talks at schools around southwest CO and northwest NM. This position reports to the Executive Director. Training and curriculum materials provided.

RESPONSIBILITIES

. Act as a Field Instructor for Spring 2008 Children Discovering Nature (CDN) program.
. Teach school-based CDN in schools and at the Durango Nature Center.
. Tuesday – Friday, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm. Daily hours could be more depending on classroom teaching schedule.
. Dates of service are Tuesday, March 25 through Friday, May 30.

REQUIREMENTS

. Enthusiasm for the DNS mission and programs
. Ability to work independently within the CDN curriculum guidelines
. CPR and First Aid Certifications
. Self-directed, self-motivated, efficient, energetic
. Teaching background desired
. Natural history knowledge desired but not required
. Must have own transportation
. Must be email savvy 
. Excellent people skills in person and on telephone

COMPENSATION

. $9 - $12 per hour, depending on experience
. Daily travel stipend of $10 for each day worked
. Contractor pays personal taxes, Medicare and Social Security
. No other benefits provided
