HIKES, WORKSHOPS, & FAMILY EVENTS
Four to five workshops
are scheduled every year on subjects such as mushroom hunting,
edible and medicinal plants, birding and geology. These
are available to the community-at-large. Workshops
are
designed
primarily
for
adults and families
and can take place at the Durango Nature Center or other
local outdoor locations. Durango Nature Studies
members receive a discount on all
workshop
fees.
A list and schedule of workshops for the current season can
be accessed by viewing our website calendar.
About ten months out of the year, Durango
Nature Studies leads groups of 10-15 people on two hour full
moon hikes at various locations throughout the area. These
hikes are lead by a trained
naturalist,
and participants learn about the local flora and fauna, current
happenings in the natural world, nighttime senses and astronomy
events. Snack and a drink are provided.
These hikes are not an exercise in fitness, but rather a
chance to slow down and notice the cooling quieting world
around us. Hikes
are geared to the slowest member of the group, and are generally
lead with no specific destination in mind, other than a good
place to view the rising moon. They are recommended to those
of moderate fitness level or above, and for family members
nine years of age or older (though only a parent knows how
far
their
child can hike without becoming bored or exhausted).
These popular hikes are announced in the local
papers and on radio
the week prior, but they fill up fast. Call early to sign
up. There is a nominal fee to attend. View our web site calendar for
upcoming full moon hikes.
Please leave Fido at home (No dogs allowed).

Hike info
Several times per year, Durango Nature Studies, in conjunction
with the Abbey Theatre, shows nature themed films. These
films are chosen for their family appeal and are preceded
by a brief presentation on the
subject by a Durango Nature Studies naturalist. Tickets for
these fundraising events normally run slightly higher then
normal, and proceeds go to support
Durango Nature Studies children's programs. Check our web
site calandar for
upcoming films.
