SUMMER DAY PROGRAMS 2014

Looking for single day programs to engage your kids outdoors in fun and educational ways? Whether it's hiking, playng in the river, or learning outdoor skills, DNS day programs are a great way to get your kids out of the house and spending time outdoors.

We will have a van for all programs at the Nature Center or on an out-of-town trail. We will meet at the Smiley Building for programs that include transportation.

Art in Nature

Date: Tuesday, June 17
Time: 9:00 - 2:00
Age: 8 - 13

Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members (includes transporation)
Location: Nature Center

Students will focus their attention on the aesthetics of nature while exploring patterns repeated throughout the natural landscape. Students will enjoy drawing, watercolor painting, art with natural objects, and poetry while soaking in the summer sun at the Durango Nature Center. This workshop will include an additional materials fee.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good walking shoes. A material list will be provided before the class.

Topo Maps and Orienteering

Date: Thursday, June 19
Time: 9:30 - 3:00
Age: 11 - 17
Instructor: Klancy Nixon, 749-1140
Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members (includes transporation)
Location: Nature Center

Come get lost at the Nature Center! Actually, you'll learn how to keep this from happening and what to do if it ever does! Klancy Nixon will be teaching participants how to read topographical maps, use compasses, and how to triangulate. The workshop will end with having participants complete an orienteering course.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good hiking shoes

River Fun at the Nature Center

Date: Tuesday, July 1
Time: 9:00 - 3:00
Age: 7 - 11

Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members (includes transporation)

There's nothing kids like more than spending a day in and on the river. Join us for river tromping, floating, exploring, and learning on the Florida River.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, bathing suit, closed heeled water shoes, sunscreen, hat, towel

Hiking - Fundamental Skills

Date: Tuesday, July 15
Time: 9:00 - 2:00
Age: 10 - 13

Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members (includes transporation)

Students will learn an essential hiking skill-set by familiarizing themselves with "the 10 essential" items that will ensure a safe trip, how to use them, and what to do in an emergency. Additionally, students will learn how to conserve energy, stay hydrated, and to problem solve using improvised techniques.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good hiking shoes.

Watersheds - Finding, Making, and Mapping

Date: Thursday, July 17
Time: 9:30 - 3:00
Age: 9 - 15
Instructor: Klancy Nixon, 749-1140
Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members
Location: Animas City Mountain

Come take a look at the Animas River Valley from atop Animas City Mountain. Klancy Nixon will be teaching about watersheds by having participants identify them on topographical maps. Participants will also make their own landscape and watersheds out of natural materials and will map their created watershed. The hike to the top will also include natural history of the area.
