SUMMER DAY PROGRAMS 2015

Looking for single day programs to engage your kids outdoors in fun and educational ways? Whether it's hiking, playng in the river, or learning outdoor skills, DNS day programs are a great way to get your kids out of the house and spending time outdoors.

We will have a van for all programs at the Nature Center or on an out-of-town trail. We will meet at the Smiley Building for programs that include transportation.

Topo Maps and Orienteering

Date: Tuesday, June 16
Time:
9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 and returns at 3:30)
Age: 8-13
Instructor: Josh Hodorff
Cost: $25 for non-members, $15 for members (includes transporation)
Location: Nature Center

Come get lost at the Nature Center! Actually, you'll learn how to keep this from happening and what to do if it ever does! We will be teaching participants how to read topographical maps, use compasses, and how to triangulate. The workshop will end with having participants complete an orienteering course.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good hiking shoes

Tracking (Full)

Date: Thursday, June 18
Time: 9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 and returns at 3:30)
Age: 8-12

Location: Nature Center

Spend the day learning the basics of tracking and sign recognition and searching the Nature Center for tracks to follow. We'll discover a day in the life of an animal by following in its footsteps. We will also create journals to keep track of which animals we learn about.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good hiking shoes

Art in Nature

Date: Tuesday. June 30
Time: 9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 and returns at 3:30)
Age: 8 - 13

Location: Nature Center

Students will focus their attention on the aesthetics of nature while exploring patterns repeated throughout the natural landscape. Students will enjoy drawing, watercolor painting, art with natural objects, and poetry while soaking in the summer sun at the Durango Nature Center. This workshop will include an additional materials fee.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, sunscreen, good walking shoes, and a smile.

River Fun at the Nature Center (3 spots left)

Date: Tuesday, July 14
Time: 9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 and returns at 3:30)
Age: 7 - 11

There's nothing kids like more than spending a day in and on the river. Join us for river tromping, floating, exploring, and learning on the Florida River.
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, watter bottle, bathing suit, closed heeled water shoes, sunscreen, hat, towel

Survival 101: shelter, water, food, calmness

Date: Thursday, July 16
Time: 9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 and returns at 3:30)
Age: 8 - 13

Location: Durango Nature Center

Students will learn essential wilderness survival skills including seeking and building shelter, obtaining potable water, finding safe and nutritious food, and keeping a level head when faced with adversity. In addition, students will be challenged with several scenarios in which they will practice their survival skills while working with a group. The goal is that students build confidence in the outdoors and develop a sense of "preventative search and rescue."
Items to bring: Day pack with lunch, snacks, water bottle, sunscreen, good walking shoes, and a smile.
