Looking for single day programs to engage your kids outdoors in fun and educational ways? Whether it's hiking, playng in the river, or learning outdoor skills, DNS day programs are a great way to get your kids out of the house and spending time outdoors.

We will have a van for all programs at the Nature Center. We will meet at the Smiley Building for programs that include transportation.

Junior Birding

Date: Tuesday, June 21
Time: 9:00 - 3:00 (van picks up at 8:30 at the Smiley Bldg and returns at 3:30)
Age: 8 - 13

Art in Nature (2 spots left)

Date: Wednesday, June 22

Students will focus their attention on the aesthetics of nature and how to enjoy making art with and in nature. Students will enjoy drawing, watercolor painting, and art with natural objects, while soaking in the summer sun at the Durango Nature Center.

Map and Compass (FULL)

Come get lost at the Nature Center! Actually, you'll learn how to keep this from happening and what to do if it ever does! We will be teaching participants how to read topographical maps, use compasses, and how to triangulate. The workshop will end with having participants complete an orienteering course.

Survival 101 (FULL)

Date: Friday, July 8

Location: Durango Nature Center

Students will learn essential wilderness survival skills including seeking and building shelter, obtaining potable water, finding safe and nutritious food, and keeping a level head when faced with adversity. In addition, students will be challenged with several scenarios in which they will practice their survival skills while working with a group. The goal is that students build confidence in the outdoors and develop a sense of "preventative search and rescue."

Fort Fun (FULL)

Students will have a blast building their own forts with team members by using natural materials found around the Nature Center. We will discover fort-building basics that make for a superb fort.

Tracking

Date: Thursday, August 11

Tracks can reveal many clues about an animal’s life. Spend the day learning basic tracking skills and animal sign recognition. Students will be exploring the Nature Center to discover the clues left behind by animals and what these signs can tell us. We will be keeping tracking journals to ensure we capture our findings of the different animals that we learn about along the way!

Archaeology and Human History at the Nature Center

Come explore the history of the people who have called the Nature Center home. We will hike to the small archeological site at the base of the cliffs, look for undiscovered evidence, and learn some the survival strategies of early native people who took advantage of the natural resources they found.

Insect Investigation (FULL)
