Here’s a de-skunking recipe formulated by chemist, Paul Krebaum, of Molex Inc. The recipe was published in the August 1995 issue of Popular Science.
INGREDIENTS
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
PROCEDURE
1. Wet your dog with a hose
2. Mix the ingredients together in a container (it will foam!)
3. Slowly pour onto the dog while rubbing into the fur
4. Rinse well
TIPS
. For a big dog, you may need to double the ingredients.
. Some folks say
that you can also
wash your clothes
in this recipe, but
be warned that the
recipe does foam,
so do not use in
the washing machine.
. The recipe may
cause your clothes
or the fur of your
dog to fade.
. Be careful washing
the face of your
dog. These
ingredients can irritate
the eyes.
. If your dog's eyes are red and swollen after the skunk encounter, he or she may have been sprayed directly in the face. Contact your veterinarian about eye drops that may help.
. If you have a repeat,
mix the ingredients fresh. Do not store.
